Cowgirl U 2008 will be held at the Sweet Grass Ranch outside of Big Timber, Montana in the Crazy Mountains. This workshop is organized and sponsored by the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame in Fort Worth, Texas. The women leaders have already been inducted into the Cowgirl Museum. This weekend you will have the opportunity to participate in activities that will inspire and develop the "cowgirl spirit". It will be fun and exciting.

Film or digital cameras are acceptable. No daily film processing is available. However you may send a CD of scanned selected photographs from the workshop for critique only if you are a film user. If you use a digital camera it should have a manual capability and you MUST know how to use the camera. Bring your camera manual. A laptop will be very helpful during the workshop but is not absolutely necessary. I will have several available for use. Several filters will be helpful: a circular polarizing filter; graduated neutral density filters nos. 2 and 4 and a fog filter are suggested. I have a number of tripods available for use so you need not bring one unless you are staying longer and want to bring your own. Zoom lenses are encouraged. Macro lenses will be useful for wildflower photography. There will be nightly reviews of your work and critiques. And the last night will be the Grand Finale show of your best work. June 8 - 15, 2008 Photography Workshop

This photography workshop will be held at the Sweet Grass Ranch outside Big Timber, Montana in the Crazy Mountains. This ranch has a gorgeous location in an old wide canyon. Lodging is either in log or rustic cabins or the two story old log main building, all with a bath. There will be all kinds of horse activities. If you wish, you can ride horseback and learn to photograph from on horseback. There will be a horse trainer working with young horses, swimming horses (if the creek is not so high and swift that it is dangerous). Weather permitting, there will be a campfire dinner which you can ride horseback to and from. The workshop is limited to no more than 15 participants.
This workshop is for photographers who want to experience new ways of seeing and who know how to use their cameras, lenses and filters to produce the photographs they see with their hearts and eyes. We will be photographing horses and horse activities including training and shoeing horses, sunrise and sunsets, clouds, landscapes, wildflowers, cowboys and other ranch workers, night skies, buildings, and possibly a cattle branding. We will be concentrating on composition, design, motion, use of available light and action.

You must know HOW to use your camera. Study your manual before you come and bring it with you. Tripods will be helpful but not necessary as I have several and we can share. Several filters will be helpful: a circular polarizing filter, two graduated neutral density filters No. 2 and 4 ( best to use the Cokin system or something like that that sits in front of your lens and does not rotate as the lens focuses); a graduated "tobacco" colored filter (Cokin system) and a fog filter which can help you achieve exciting light effects. A macro lens will be helpful for wildflower photography. There will be nightly reviews of your work and critiques all done with a laptop computer and a digital computer. You probably will want a laptop computer to review, sort and edit your work.

June 29 - July 6 Lazy K Bar Ranch Photography Workshop

This workshop will be held at the Lazy K Bar Ranch outside of Big Timber, Montana. This is a spectacular young and not wide canyon, The all-inclusive rates for the workshop including lodging and meals but excluding horseback riding is $1475 for the week. Lodging is in rustic log cabins with bath, all meals and activities such as the Saturday night square dance, Sunday morning campfire breakfast cookout, parade and rodeo in Harlowton, Montana, and working with young horses, and possibly a visit to the Bar B. Payment to the Lazy K Bar Ranch of $775 must be made a month in advance of the workshop. This is a special rate. Payment to Barbara Van Cleve of $700 must be made a month in advance of the workshop.
This workshop is for photographers who wish to expand their ways of seeing through new experiences. We will be working on composition, line, content, positive and negative space (balance), and exposure as well as depth of field. We will work in Portraiture and Landscapes especially.
This will be a digital black and white workshop with emphasis on working with RAW (and JPEG) images and converting them to full tonal range black and white images. We will also work with histograms, conversion methods and curves. It will be best if you bring your own laptop computer on which you have loaded Photoshop CS2 and if possible Photoshop CS3.
You must be very familiar with your digital camera. Bring your camera manual. Tripods will be helpful for night photography but I have several that everyone can share if you don't bring one. Filters will be helpful such as: a circular polarizing filter and a fog filter. These can go on the auto focusing cameras with no problem. For these next three filters you will need a system (such as the Cokin) that attaches to the front of your lens into which you slip the filters which do not move during auto focusing. They are: a graduated "tobacco colored" filter, a No. 2 and a No. 4 graduated neutral density filters. Zoom lenses are encouraged. Macro lenses will be very useful for wildflower photography. At night your work will be projected with a digital computer for a class critique. Bring at least five CDs for saving and storing your work.
You will have the opportunity to photograph cowboys at work on the ranch with horses, landscapes, wildflowers, go behind the chutes at a local rodeo, clouds and skies, old abandoned schools, rural churches and small towns, horses being trained, night skies, gathering horses and running them into the corrals at dawn. You will also be shooting some portraits and photographing in several local saloons after the rodeo. Lots of characters. If you wish to use the photographs you make for commercial purposes please bring your own Model Release and Property Release forms to have them signed by the people you photograph.
